Hey … WHAT’S UP??? Processed foods are making us sick, that’s what’s up!!

Welcome to episode number 5 of English Teacher John’s ‘What’s Up? Podcast.’ You guessed it, this is John speaking and I am refreshed, alive and well and sending digital bits and bytes to you from our small home here in Matsumoto, Japan.

Let's eat more fresh foods!

Okay, maybe you’re a little tired of hearing about my recent fasting experience at the health spa in Koh Samui, Thailand. I wrote about it on my blog, I talked about it in Podcast number 37 and yes, you’re probably going to hear the second part of the recorded audio very soon on AdventurePod English No. 2. Well, let me open up the discussion a little here.

What the heck are we eating? Is all of that food in the supermarket good for our bodies? Is ANY of it good for us?? If not, WHY WHY WHY are all of the food companies selling us food that’s not very healthy?? Is it just business as usual or is there some rationale to it?? Please help me to understand it because I just don’t get it.

Yeah okay, I was just in a place that was founded on alternative principles of health, healing and nutrition. So, I may be a little tainted right now but I think there are some really good things to ponder here.

So, here’s my question: What percentage of all that food in the supermarket is nutritious, easily digested and provides the body with what it needs?? You know what … I think the percentage is VERY LOW! I know that the raw fruits and vegetables are certainly good for the body, but how about all the other stuff??

We’re going to talk about PROCESSED FOODS, so first, let me give you my definition of processed foods: By PROCESSED FOODS, I mean any food that has been specially treated or changed, and usually it’s by an automated process.

Okay, let’s get into the meat of this issue. I’m willing to make two bold statements:

Okay, statement number ONE: we would all be A LOT HEALTHIER if we DIDN’T EAT ANY processed foods.

Bold statement number TWO: we would all be A LOT HEALTHIER if we ate fresh foods, more and more and more fresh foods: fruits and vegetables that are in the same basic state that they exist in nature; their natural state. Isn’t that what our bodies really want?? Fruits and vegetables that are in their natural, unprocessed state.

(Now, in this short rant, I’m not even going to talk about vegetarianism. That’s a topic for another day.)

Hey, do you feel better when you eat a lot of fresh, unprocessed foods? I sure do. I feel lighter. I feel like my body is working well, blood is flowing, energy is flowing, digestion is comfortable and efficient.

If many of us can agree that fresh, unprocessed foods are much better for our health, then why have we created the situation where the easiest and most abundant food available to us … is mostly UNHEALTHY PROCESSED FOODS??!!

I have an idea: think about your health, your food, your body, the value of fresh fruits and vegetables versus processed foods. Think about it. Then, let’s all make an effort to buy and eat more fresh foods, delicious fruits and vegetables. Let’s stay away from the boxed, bagged, packaged, processed foods that have lists of ingredients longer than a politician’s speech. What are all those chemicals anyway?? Do you really think those chemicals are beneficial to the body and your health. I don’t.

Don’t forget about my two bold statements:

Number ONE: we would all be A LOT HEALTHIER if we DIDN’T EAT ANY processed foods.

Number TWO: we would all be A LOT HEALTHIER if we ate fresh foods, more and more fresh foods.

That’s all for now. I wish you fresh and healthy meals today, tomorrow and into the future.
